TAKE CARE AT AMOS ANDERSON MUSEUM

Center for Contemporary Arts, Estonia announces the opening of “TAKE CARE – Politics of Emancipation”. Since 9th April 2010 the works of seven Finnish and Estonian contemporary artists are on display at Amos Anderson Art Museum. Exhibiting artists include Laura Horelli, Jaana Kokko, Marge Monko, Marko Mäetamm, Teemu Mäki, Liina Siib, Ingrid Ung.

The exhibition title contains key words to the exhibition: care and emancipation. These words are often associated with the so-called second sex. Even though the works on display often deal with women in society (e. g. Liina Siib’s photographs from the series “A Woman Takes Little Space” or Marge Monko’s film “Forum”), they also show how human beings regardless of gender always interact with others. Each work acts as a separate manifesto with emphases shifting from the personal to the communal. Together they form an entity that speaks of fear, hope, resistance, power and hierarchies.

The exhibition has been produced by AV-Arkki and the Center for Contemporary Arts, Estonia (CCA) in collaboration with the Amos Anderson Art Museum. More information can be found on the homepage of Amos Anderson Art Museum.

KURVITZ AND KÜNNAPU AT VILNIUS PAINTING TRIENNAL

Center for Contemporary Arts, Estonia announces the opening of the 14th Vilnius Painting Triennial on June 18th, 2010, where Raoul Kurvitz ja August Künnapu from Estonia have been selected for participation.

Since antiquity, painting has struggled with its status as a ‘tradition’. This constant awareness of the past is a mixed blessing for contemporary painting. Many of the approaches that contemporary painters are choosing from have been available for generations. Shall painting be used to make images, or shall it by-pass any quest for illusion and express itself through gesture and tactility? Shall painting stay on the surface or shall it create depth? Shall it visualise ideas or attract attention to its own materiality?

The 14th Vilnius Painting Triennial presents painters who exemplify the tension between tradition and newness and who articulate different attitudes towards the image, the gesture, time and subjectivity.

Artists: Jānis Avotiņš, John Baldessari, Romualdas Balinskas, Lina Bjerneld, Niels Bonde, Michaël Borremans, Koen van der Broek, Ina Budrytė, Damien Cadio, Henrikas Čerapas, Hadassah Emmerich, Takeo Hanazawa, Hannaleena Heiska, Jörg Herold, Kim Hiorthøy, O Jun, Patricija Jurkšaitytė, Tillman Kaiser, Eglė Karpavičiūtė, August Künnapu, Raoul Kurvitz, Matts Leiderstam, Tor-Magnus Lundeby, Viktor Man, Inga Meldere, Eglė Ridikaitė, Nina Roos, Viktor Rosdhahl, Adam Saks, Praneet Soi, Radek Szlaga, Ričardas Povilas Vaitekūnas, Aušra Barzdukaitė – Vaitkūnienė, Ruslan Vashkevich, Matthias Weischer, Alfonsas Vilpišauskas, Jakub Julian Ziólkowski.
