2nd ANNUAL EXHIBITION 'UNEXISTENT ART'

14.10.–6.11.1994
Curator Urmas Muru

The “Unexistent Art” exhibition explores those areas of life that traditionally have not been considered art, but where art is penetrating now, such as the media, communications, science, technology, business, religion, behavior, etc.

Artists are interested in dealing with many questions in those areas, yet they are not fields of art. The attitude of an artist in those fields is asking questions, leaving the answering to others. Unexistent art does not refer to non-existence in time or space (future, past, immateriality), but to the timely nature of art, influenced by technology and new available means of communications. Although virtual reality works or video telephone performances are not always feasible, the changes in art are not limited. Art explores changes in all fields of life. The exhibition took place in the Gallery of the Institute of History, Artmaiden Gallery, Sammas Gallery, Vaal Gallery and Harju 13 Gallery. 28 artists participated: Andres Adamson, Peeter Allik, Karlo Funk, Jan J. Graps, Allan Hmelnitski, Kai Kaljo, Mati Karmin, Ando Keskküla, Raoul Kurvitz, Andro Kööp, Peeter Laurits, Pier Li, Reda Marks, Herkki E. Merila, Jüri Ojaver, Peeter Pere, Tairo Pärnamets, Rasmus Reinolt, Lembit Sarapuu, Ene-Liis Semper, Studio 22, Mare Tralla, Margus Tõnnov, Mart Viljus. The prize jury (Krista Kodres, Asko Mäkelä, Paul Rodgers, Reet Varblane, John Wyver) awarded the main prize to Jüri Ojaver (“Unexistent Cemetery”), and prizes to Kai Kaljo (“The Genesis and Disappearance of Life”) and Mare Tralla (“Two Ways to Look at Oneself”).
