An award to Toomik’s short film at Oberhausen

Jaan Toomik’s short film “Communion” (2007, 12 min, 35 mm) received an award at the 54th International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen. The festival’s organizing committee described Toomik’s director debut it as a “disturbing film, which reflects with precise scenes the fear and angst of connection of a man”.

The awarded film was submitted to the 54th International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen by the Center for Contemporary Arts, Estonia. Jaan Toomik, who is mostly known as a video artist completed this film in 2007 for his solo exhibition at Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn. Currently it can be seen at Toomik's solo exhibition in Riga Art Space, which is open until 16th of June 2008. The film, where director’s long time friend, an amateur actor Alar Sudak (a.k.a. Elaan) played the protagonist, participated at this year's international competition programme, which had 62 entries from 42 countries. According to organizers of the festival 5,840 works from 87 countries were submitted in the year of 2008. In total 132 short films and videos from 47 countries were shown in four different competitions.

The 54th International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen took place from the 1st until 6th of May 2008. It is an annual international short film festival, which was founded in 1954 and is considered to be on of the most prestigious (not to mention one of the oldest) short film festivals in the world. World famous film directors like Werner Herzog, Roman Polanski and Martin Scorsese have participated in the festival. Yet Jaan Toomik is just one of the many contemporary artists whose film has been shown in Oberhausen in 2008 (among the other artists represented were Manon de Boer, Yael Bartana, Emily Wardill and Susanna Wallin), even somewhat a trend in recent years…
