Jaan Toomik’s first solo exhibition in Riga
2.05.-16.06.2008
From 2nd of May 2008 a substantial overview exhibition of Jaan Toomik’s works is displayed in newly opened Riga Art Space. The show, entitled “Invisible Pearls”, brings together many of his numerous video works, while for the first time introducing him also as a painter to Riga’s art public.Toomik, internationally one of the most well known Estonian contemporary artists, has in fact his first solo exhibition in Latvia. The exhibition characterises Toomik’s development from the position of a (post)minimalist video artist through stark and honest video documentaries to his first experiments as a “classical” filmmaker, shooting on 35 mm film reels. Works like “Dancing with Dad” (2003), “Invisible Pearls” (2004), “Jaanika” (2007) etc, are displayed alongside his newest paintings, never shown anywhere else before. The curator of the exhibition is Iéva Kulakova and it’s supported by Center For Contemporary Arts, Estonia.
