Elin Kard, curatorial text to a solo exhibition at Hobusepea gallery 18.03.–30.03.2009:

LIINA SIIB's (1963) personal exhibition Woman takes up less space will be opened in Hobusepea gallery on March 18, 2009, at 6pm.

Siib's artwork under the title Woman takes up less space is partly inspired by the opinion articles on equal sex that were published in Estonian press two years ago. Bearing in mind the more or less misleading argument that women need less space and salary for doing their daily job than their male colleagues, Liina Siib began taking photos of random women whom she met in public. According to the artist statement, „selected photographed situations express the fact that for a moment, certain points of randomness coincide with those inside of the photographer, while identifying herself with the type and situation. Even if being compressed in tight conditions, the women that Siib has depicted still remain on their own, expressing the nondescript desires and dreams of the indifferent rooms.

These photos do not directly illustrate the argument of a smaller space, but are induced by dreams and reality. Siib's work is contemplating the small facts of these women's lives, while wondering what to do with femininity? Today's society offers women more opportunities than ever before – yet, how to answer the call, and how to be responsible for one's life?“

While partly illustrating the opinion articles, Liina Siib is not positioning herself but visualizing the hermetically self-reproductive role-image.

Exhibition open until March 30, 2009.

Supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
